Barratt Developments, the UK’s largest housebuilder, has announced that all its future residential projects in London will be constructed to meet Passivhaus standards or higher. This initiative, branded as ‘Lo-E’ (Low Energy), aims to deliver ultra-energy-efficient homes across the capital, marking a significant shift in sustainable urban housing.
The first Lo-E homes are planned for Bollo Lane in Acton and High Barnet, totaling 728 units. These projects are part of a £1.9 billion partnership with Places for London, Transport for London’s property arm, to construct 4,000 homes over the next decade, with half designated as affordable housing.
Passivhaus standards focus on exceptional energy efficiency, incorporating features like airtight construction, triple glazing, and individual heat pumps. These design elements can reduce heating bills by up to 80% and carbon emissions by as much as 90% compared to traditional homes.
Craig Carson, Managing Director at Barratt West London, stated, “Our Lo-E homes concept is an opportunity to think differently and deliver a new approach to high-density, sustainable housing in London.”
