Saudi Downtown Company Awards Al Khobar Downtown Infrastructure Contract to Ansab

Saudi Downtown Company, a Public Investment Fund company charged with developing downtown destinations across the Kingdom's cities, has awarded the Al Khobar Downtown infrastructure contract to Ansab, a Saudi company specialising in infrastructure and road network delivery.

Project overview

  • Project name: Al Khobar Downtown infrastructure works

  • Client: Saudi Downtown Company (SDC), a PIF company

  • Appointed firm: Ansab

  • Location: Al Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia

  • Sector: Urban destination infrastructure, roads and utilities

The downtown destinations programme

Saudi Downtown Company is developing mixed use downtown destinations across multiple Saudi cities, aiming to create commercial, hospitality, entertainment and residential districts in secondary cities beyond the giga project heartlands of Riyadh and the Red Sea coast. Infrastructure enabling packages such as this one, covering roads, utilities and public realm groundwork, are the first physical stage of these masterplans and typically precede vertical construction tenders by twelve to twenty four months.

For contractors watching the Eastern Province, the award adds to an already busy regional picture. The province led the Kingdom in project awards during June, taking 40 percent of contracts by number and over SAR 11.4 billion by value, ahead of even the Riyadh region.

What comes next at Al Khobar

Infrastructure awards of this kind establish the delivery platform for the buildings which follow, and firms interested in the vertical packages, from hospitality and retail through to residential, should treat the enabling works award as the signal to begin positioning. Al Khobar's waterfront location and established commercial base make it one of the stronger secondary city markets in the Kingdom, as recent large residential awards in the city have already shown.
