Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, is embarking on a transformative journey to modernise its iconic Raml Tram system. This ambitious project aims to rejuvenate a network that has been a cornerstone of the city’s public transport since 1860, blending historical preservation with contemporary urban mobility solutions.
A Historic Network Poised for Transformation
The Raml Tram, one of the oldest electrified tram systems globally, spans a 13.2-kilometre route with 24 stations, connecting Victoria Station to Raml Square. Despite its rich heritage, the system has faced challenges such as outdated infrastructure, slow speeds, and declining ridership. The rehabilitation project seeks to address these issues by enhancing efficiency, capacity, and passenger comfort.
Project Scope and Objectives
The comprehensive overhaul includes:
Infrastructure Upgrades: Rehabilitation of tracks, construction of elevated viaducts at key intersections, and development of a modern maintenance depot.
Station Enhancements: Modernisation of all 24 stations to improve accessibility and passenger experience.
Rolling Stock Renewal: Procurement of new tram units to replace the aging fleet, ensuring reliability and comfort.
Operational Improvements: Installation of advanced signalling systems to increase operational speed from 11 km/h to 21 km/h, reducing journey times from 60 to 35 minutes.
These enhancements aim to triple the tram’s capacity from 4,700 to 13,800 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly improving urban mobility in Alexandria.
Environmental and Social Impact
The project aligns with Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development by promoting environmentally friendly mass transit solutions. Benefits include:
Reduced Emissions: Modern trams and improved traffic flow contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Enhanced Urban Aesthetics: Upgraded stations and infrastructure improve the cityscape.
Economic Growth: Improved transportation supports local businesses and tourism.

Revitalising the Raml Tram is more than an infrastructure project; it’s a testament to Alexandria’s dedication to preserving its heritage while embracing modernity. This initiative not only enhances daily commutes but also reinforces the city’s identity, blending historical charm with contemporary functionality.
