ALEC Engineering Signs $1.7 Billion Sphere Abu Dhabi Construction Contract

ALEC Engineering and Contracting has signed a construction contract worth approximately $1.7 billion with the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, to deliver Sphere Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. The venue will be the first Sphere development outside the United States and only the second built anywhere in the world.

Project overview

  • Project name: Sphere Abu Dhabi

  • Client: Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi

  • Appointed firm: ALEC Engineering and Contracting

  • Contract value: Approximately $1.7 billion

  • Location: Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

  • Scope of works: Design, procurement and construction of an immersive entertainment venue, including advanced structural systems, digital display technology and high capacity performance facilities

A new entertainment landmark

Once complete, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to become a major addition to Yas Island's entertainment offering, introducing next generation immersive technology to the Middle East and supporting the emirate's wider tourism growth ambitions. Yas Island already hosts Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and Yas Waterworld, and the addition of a Sphere venue positions the island as a concentrated entertainment district capable of drawing repeat visitors across multiple attraction types rather than a single day trip destination.

Completion is targeted for the third quarter of 2029, a timeline that reflects both the technical complexity of the build and the scale of the fit out required once the primary structure is complete, since a venue of this kind depends as much on its internal digital display and audio visual systems as it does on the structural shell itself.

A complex build for the region

The project sits among the most technically demanding entertainment venues under construction in the region, requiring specialist expertise in structural engineering, audio visual infrastructure and large scale digital display systems. The original Sphere venue in Las Vegas required years of specialist engineering work to perfect its curved structural frame and its immersive interior display wrap, and replicating that at a comparable scale in Abu Dhabi's climate and construction market presents its own distinct set of engineering and logistics challenges.

For ALEC, a contractor already well established across the UAE's high profile entertainment, hospitality and aviation projects, the award adds a landmark reference project to its portfolio and further cements its position as one of the region's go to contractors for architecturally and technically complex builds.
