NMDC and Etermar Deliver UAE’s First Caisson-Based Quays: A New Era in Marine Infrastructure

In a landmark achievement for the UAE’s maritime sector, Abu Dhabi-based National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) and Portuguese marine engineering firm Etermar have successfully completed the nation’s first caisson-based quay construction. This pioneering project introduces a sustainable and efficient approach to marine infrastructure, setting new standards in the region.
Project Overview
Location: Artificial offshore island, Abu Dhabi
Scope: 600 linear metres of berth constructed using 16 reinforced concrete caissons (2 x 300m quay walls)
Purpose: To accommodate mega yachts exceeding 100 metres in length
Timeline: Completed in just five months
Workforce: Approximately 190 multinational workers, with about half being Portuguese nationals
The project was executed on an artificial island designed and built by NMDC, aiming to berth some of the world’s largest mega yachts. The rapid completion within five months underscores the efficiency of caisson-based construction methods.
Delivery Partners
NMDC Group: Served as the main contractor, responsible for the overall project execution, including the design and construction of the offshore island, dredging, reclamation, breakwater, revetment, beach profiling, and quay wall construction.
Etermar Engenharia: A Portuguese marine engineering company specializing in floating concrete structures. Etermar was instrumental in introducing caisson technology to the UAE, handling the design and installation of the caissons.
Technical Approach
The project utilized 16 reinforced concrete caissons, each forming part of the two 300-metre quay walls. These caissons were constructed locally at Mina Zayed Port on a floating dock mobilized from Portugal by Etermar. Once completed, they were towed to the project site and installed offshore. The construction also included the detailed design of capping beams, scour protection systems, and foundation trenches.
